Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup Second Round   24/02/2019

Naas 19 - Gorey 20

Less than 24 hours after the jubilation of an AIL victory for their 1st XV, the Naas 2nd XV had the heartbreak of losing to Gorey in the Provincial Towns Cup. Incredibly like the game the previous day this was also decided with the last kick of the game.

With the wind at their backs Gorey started well and within twenty minutes had built up a 14 point lead thanks to tries by Joe Naughton and Ethan Badham, both of which were converted by James Nolan. However on 26 minutes following good work by the Naas pack, Jack Barry crashed over to reduce the deficit with Cillian Dempsey adding the conversion.

Three Dempsey penalties in the first twenty minutes of the second half put Naas 16-14 in front and although Nolan added a Gorey penalty after 66 minutes, Dempsey was again successful with another effort with ten minutes left.

Naas remained 19-17 in front as the game entered the sixth minute of injury when Gorey received the ball deep inside their own half. They were to produce an inspired passage of play that any international side would have been proud of. They went up the pitch inch by inch, going through over 40 phases in the process, in a move that took almost nine minutes. Naas could just not get their hands on the ball, and this led to Gorey working their way into drop goal range. Stephen Duke made no mistake when the opportunity presented itself, successfully knocking the ball through the posts, gaining a dramatic victory for his side and a quarter-final meeting with Ashbourne on St. Patricks Day.

Naas: Niall Delahunt, Rory Cleary, Ross Bailey Kearney, Rob Campbell, Joe Darcy, Michael Skelton, Gauthier Petit, Stephen Lackey, Cathal Duff, Jack Barry, Gary Rowan, Colm Gorry, Ruadhan McDonnell, Cillian Dempsey, Pierce Dargan.
* The Naas 3XV had a fine 13-11 win away to Carlow on Saturday afternoon in the Second Round of the Provincial Towns Seconds Cup.
